NUTRETO Initiative

Nurturing trees together

NUTRETO is a climate change action project that is led by children of ages between 10-18 years in schools including children living with disabilities.  It emphasizes the importance of nurturing sprouts today to cultivate a greener and more sustainable environment tomorrow.

NU.TRE.TO is a groundbreaking climate change initiative that stands for “NURTURING TREES TOGETHER.” pointing to the heart of the project in promoting inclusion. This initiative not only demonstrates a commitment to environmental stewardship but also emphasizes the inclusion and empowerment of children with disabilities in climate action. Both, the children and the tree seedlings are the sprouts for a better tomorrow

The NUTRETO initiative promotes climate action through practical tree planting and nurturing program implemented in partnership with students in learning institutions. The initiative focuses on restoring the environment, improving biodiversity and building long-term climate resilience within schools and surrounding communities.

A key innovation of the program is the use of repurposed plastic drip irrigation systems, created from recycled materials to provide efficient and sustainable watering solutions for young trees. This low cost system ensures consistent moisture supply, reduces water wastage and increases tree survival rates, especially in dry seasons.

By involving students directly, the program builds environmental awareness, hands-on conservation skills and a sense of responsibility for nature. It also encourages innovation in recycling, showing how plastic waste can be transformed into useful climate –smart technologies.

Through this initiative, Makele Youth is nurturing both trees and future environmental leaders –linking education, sustainability and innovation for greener and more resilient future.
